Super8 to DVD conversion is very similar to 8mm to DVD conversion. The film is the same size, but cameras use more of the film’s frame, resulting in a larger picture. Along with just a few enhancements, the result is a better picture with a landscape appearance.

To capture Super 8 film with acceptable quality, I use studio-grade scanning equipment and software that supports both 8mm and Super 8mm film, as well as 16mm. Today, frame-by-frame scanning is the best practice for film to DVD conversion.

DVD, Digital, or Both

DVDs are still available for viewers who grew up with them, have DVD players, and are comfortable with that format. Sharing DVD-based videos requires DVD duplication and mailing, and backup requires additional copies as well. DVD fans often overlook one crucial item: backing up the DVD player with a second player. Backed-up DVDs are worthless without a player, and while players are available today, just like VHS players, they will not be manufactured forever.

As an alternative, consider using Super 8 to digital rather than to DVD. The benefits include the ability to share, backup, and edit your videos, in addition to the bonus of playing them on all of your digital devices, including smartphones, smart TVs, computers, laptops, and tablets.

If you insist on DVDs, the best comprehensive strategy is to acquire a digital version of your video in addition to the DVDs. You receive the benefits of both worlds, plus you can burn new DVDs from digital backups if needed.
