Unlike other videotape to DVD conversions, miniDV to DVD is a step backward. A smaller version of DVCam videotape, the video content on the magnetic tape is already in digital format. Compared to today’s high resolution, it is not very impressive, but in its time, it was outstanding. DVD is a more primitive format than miniDV and should be used only for cases where DVDs are still the standard.

Comparing miniDV tape to its predecessors, miniDV is a smaller format with superior quality, and is recorded with outstanding cameras. The result is a great camcorder product.

So, Why Convert miniDV?

Unfortunately, just like its predecessors, miniDV suffers from the same issues – it is magnetic tape. See “The Top 5 Reasons for Converting Video Tape to DVD”. Magnetic tape deteriorates over time, is frequently lost, and wears out. If you desire to keep your miniDV video and you watch videos on DVDs, then converting the tapes to DVD is important.

MiniDV also suffers from a severe lack of tape players. Professionals play video using miniDV/DVCam tape decks, as rare as they are, but most decks no longer play at all. Many people play back their tapes through their cameras! Regardless of playback method, playing the tapes on a working machine is a prerequisite to converting them to DVD. Once tape players disappear, so does the opportunity to convert them and watch them again.

Key Benefits and Considerations

The primary benefit of miniDV to DVD is to watch your video again, eliminating the risk of tape decay and the increasing lack of miniDV players. Retain video quality by setting the DVD settings carefully. Copies can be made for friends and family, but they must still be using DVD players as well.

A great digital conversion strategy is to purchase a digital version of your DVD as well, giving you the ability to share with others who do not have DVD players. The digital backup also serves as a source to replace damaged DVDs.
