Most importantly, your video can now be secure. You can't scratch, break, or wear out digital miniDV. You can back it up, copy it, share it, and duplicate it without limit. Just like all tape-based technology, the writing is on the wall - sooner or later, there will not be any more machines to play their videos (or to convert them).

It Really Is Important!

There are three choices for your video memories:

  1. Convert them to Digital
  2. Pay next year's prices
  3. Throw them out
  4. OK 4 choices - continue to store them without playing

What is so Special About miniDV?

MiniDV is superior quality because it's digital, but it's on magnetic tape and will deteriorate over time. Even more alarming is that the number of machines needed to play these tapes is also declining every day.

The video and audio technology is essentially the same as Digital8, its predecessor, except that it is much smaller, and so are its cameras, camera bags, and tapes. Digital8 video is called DV (Wikipedia: Digital Video) technology, which miniDV (and DVCAM) improved, naming it HDV (High Definition Video). It is so good that many videographers still use it professionally today. It is still possible to save this high-quality video before the tape itself deteriorates.
