Reborn Audio/Video offers digital conversion to DVD for the complete Hi8 family of videotape, including Hi8, Video8, and Digital8 variations. It is often impossible to tell which one of these you might have unless they play on the correct camera or player. Fortunately, we use top-of-the-line equipment for all three options.
Advantages and Disadvantages of DVDs
DVDs have one advantage over digitized Hi8 files: they are familiar to video fans. We demanded the production of hundreds of billions of DVDs and have been watching them for a couple of decades. Today, the disadvantages of DVDs compared to digital files grow faster than new iPhone versions.
Both DVDs and Hi8 digital files contain digital data, but the formats are different, and they operate differently. DVDs play on DVD players and are home to proprietary data files. DVD files are a compressed format which have moderate setting variations.
Higher resolutions are possible, resulting in larger files, and lower resolutions produce smaller files. Since DVD limits are 4.7 gigabytes, the disc size limits resolution enhancement. Enhancing shorter DVD videos is straightforward, but larger videos require lower resolution so they fit on a disc. If higher resolution is desired for longer Hi8 conversions, the resolution may be increased while using multiple DVDs.
As with VHS players, DVD player manufacturing will cease shortly. If you choose DVDs for your conversion, consider a digital backup from which you can burn new DVDs if needed.
Digital Advantages Over DVD Conversion
Share digital files easily with friends and family, and they are editable and safe if backed up properly, which DVDs cannot do. Mp4s also use less storage space and play on most devices like smartphones, smart TVs, desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.
