While many customers convert cassettes to CDs, digitizing cassettes to digital files on a USB or other digital storage is an overwhelming trend. The benefits of digital files versus CDs are so compelling that the demand for CDs and digital files has reversed over the past few years. Almost all cassette projects demanded CDs when Reborn Audio Video opened in 2013. Today, mp3 files on a USB are the dominant delivery method.
Why Digitizing Cassettes is Better Than Converting to CD?
CDs are so much better than records or cassettes that they have dominated the audio industry for decades. What is the benefit that makes it worthwhile to convert cassettes to digital files instead?
The benefits of digital cassette conversion are:
- Ease of backup, preserving your content. You can’t scratch a digital file.
- Sharing. Instant sharing compared to mailing or even FedEx. Cheaper, too.
- Editing corrects sound and enables dynamic reorganization.
Drawbacks to Digital Conversion
Playing digital files from digitized cassettes is a different paradigm from playing a CD. For those of us who had a big adjustment learning CD technology, transitioning to digital can seem daunting. If you don’t already have mp3 players or computers that play mp3s, purchasing new equipment is next if you convert to digital. If you are not computer-savvy, new skills are needed. Otherwise, we are betting that our CD player will last longer than we do!
The Process to Convert Cassettes to Digital
- Repair tapes and cassettes as needed before digitizing the cassettes.
- “Pack” the tape. Fast forward and rewind to reestablish tape tension.
- Capture the tape. Play on a cassette player, feeding the output into a computer.
- Edit, removing dead space, adjusting volume, and removing noise.
- Copy edited files to USB or other digital storage.
