When you copy a floppy disc, remember back when the floppy disc solved all our overflow and backup storage problems. I ordered software delivered in sets of 10 or more floppy discs, and I backed up my data on them. The first generation was the 5 1/2 inch floppy, which was pretty floppy, arriving when PCs would boot from them. Next were the 3 1/4 inch floppies, misnamed because they really didn’t bend much. Zip drives followed floppies, not adopting the name because of huge steps forward in terms of storage size and reliability.
Even Apple joined the party for a few years with a floppy drive built into their Macintosh product. Of course, they used a different format than DOS or Windows, so the same equipment does not work to copy all floppy discs.
Floppy Disk to CD
Floppy drives originally came with DOS, Windows, Mac, and other PCs. Eventually, the DOS/Windows-based floppy discs receive a USB-based external reader, making this style of floppy useful again. The old Mac floppies, however, require an original Macintosh computer with a working floppy drive and do not have a USB or similar option, and 5 1/2 inch floppies require an original drive in a computer of that era as well. The difficulty of copying floppy discs to recover data should be an alarm bell for what will happen to other old media if not recovered, such as VHS to digital, 8mm film to digital, and Hi8 to digital. The future holds the same difficulty and expense.
Share Floppies with the world
After copying floppies, they share instantly through the internet. Word processing documents, financial records, databases, spreadsheets, photos, videos, and more come alive again.
Warning! Remember, the required software to access these files may no longer exist as a result of going out of business, stopping support for the version that old, or the software will not run on today’s computers. Just copying a floppy may not be enough to use its data again.
