Zip drives, which produce Zip Discs, are a short-lived external drive format that preceded external hard disc drives, creating the need to convert Zip discs to modern formats, including:
- Zip Drive to DVD
- Zip Drive to CD
- Zip Drive to Digital
If the Zip disc contains video or audio files, they convert to mp4 and mp3 files, respectively, resulting in old memories transforming into today’s modern video and audio standards.
Data Recovery is a More Accurate Term
Zip Drive production ceased in 2003 after almost a decade of production, initially marketing a valuable storage solution to back up PC hard drives. 20 years later, reading Zip drives, along with floppy drives, is more of a recovery operation than a simple copy. Working Zip drives are relatively rare, but the memories on their discs are still in demand.
Additional Benefits
Recovering old files is the primary reason for recovering Zip disc files, but sharing them is now also possible. Once copied, Zip files easily transfer to hard drives, USBs, and the cloud, unlocking share features of the cloud and email to instantly share them through the internet.
Zip Disc Considerations
Recovering Zip files does not necessarily guarantee that they will become useful. Zip Drives may have stored data onto converted Zip Discs by software programs that no longer exist. For example, some word processing companies no longer exist or no longer support old formats. Even though the file is recovered, a copy of the software that created it and a computer that runs the software are still required. Some software can still import old files.
