How to Convert Cassettes to CD

We capture the cassettes to a computer, eliminate dead space, adjust volume levels, and even do basic filtering. Optionally, we can add tracks as well. If needed, repairing tapes preceedes conversion.

“Pack” tapes before capturing. Packing is the process that restores tape tension to a cassette for the best sound possible. Some tapes are unplayable before packing, but play perfectly well after packing.

Once captured in digital format on a computer, editing is the next step in the cassette to CD project. Editing at this step is not to be confused with content editing. Eliminating dead space and space between side 1 and side 2 is next. Old recordings are often very ‘soft’, or low volume. Adjusting those levels now increases the ability to listen to the old voices. For those tapes with ‘noise’, basic filtering also cleans up the sound.

Take Care of Your Digitized Cassettes

The most important backup strategy is to make copies. Whether digital or CD, simply make copies and store them in a safe place. If you choose CDs, then also buy an extra CD player and store it with your CD copies.
