Digitize VHS For Serious Business

Most of my business is local family digital conversion. Occasionally, I digitize VHS, miniDV, slides, photos, negatives, and marketing material for business, legal, and non-profit purposes. I never publish client names or material. However, my confidential client list includes 75-year-old businesses, items from government and personal lawyers, museums, and foundations.
This decade-old article highlights how long the trend to digitize videotape and other organizational assets has been a priority. Because of this need, I have digitized Annual Reports, Company Party photos, 16mm film of corporate founding stories, brochures, and personnel negatives.
Often, I digitally consolidate the edited pieces of digitized VHS corporate assets into a single MP4 videotape for an upcoming company anniversary. Today (12 years ago when this article was first written), I make copies of the final consolidation edits of a VHS Conversion project. The highlights of a scientist’s 30-year study from a dozen videotapes combine to present an airport design. Its unique design could reduce each airplane’s takeoff/landing by 1,000 gallons, lowering tickets by $50 each!
Had we digitized this project today, we would be doing VHS to mp4 instead of DVD, taking advantage of newer technology, the power of the internet to share digitized video worldwide, safely backup, and the ability to play the digital video on many devices. Organizations that standardized on DVDs just a few years ago are converting their DVDs to digital files today.
In this case, our DVD duplication services is turning around 50 copies to distribute to FAA, government planners, and city engineers.
